There is so much to think about when you're expecting a baby that it can feel almost impossible to remember everything.

You're choosing baby gear, going to appointments, preparing your home, thinking about birth, figuring out childcare, researching feeding, and probably receiving more advice than you ever asked for. In the middle of preparing for everything your baby will need, it's surprisingly easy to overlook some of the things that will matter most to you.

7 Mistakes Expecting Mothers Make—and How to Avoid Them

There is so much to think about when you're expecting a baby that it can feel almost impossible to remember everything.

You're choosing baby gear, going to appointments, preparing your home, thinking about birth, figuring out childcare, researching feeding, and probably receiving more advice than you ever asked for. In the middle of preparing for everything your baby will need, it's surprisingly easy to overlook some of the things that will matter most to you.

After nearly 20 years of working with expecting mothers, children, and families, I've had a lot of conversations with moms about what mattered, what didn't, and what they wish they had known before their babies arrived.

While every pregnancy and every family is different, there are a few mistakes that are surprisingly common. The good news is that a little planning now can help you feel more prepared, supported, and able to actually enjoy this chapter while you're living it.

Here are seven mistakes expecting mothers make—and what you can do instead.

Colorado Mountain Maternity portraits

1. Waiting Until the Third Trimester to Start Preparing

At the beginning of pregnancy, nine months sounds like a long time. Then suddenly you're 32 or 34 weeks pregnant, you're more tired and uncomfortable than you were a few months ago, and your list still seems endless.

You're trying to finish the nursery, install the car seat, pack a hospital bag, choose a pediatrician, take a childbirth class, schedule maternity portraits, organize your baby shower gifts, and figure out everything else that needs to happen before your baby arrives.

Instead of saving everything for the final weeks, spread your preparation throughout your pregnancy.

One simple way to make this manageable is to give yourself one or two baby-related goals each week. One week you might research pediatricians. The next, you could start your registry. Another week might be dedicated to interviewing doulas or scheduling your maternity session.

You don't have to prepare for everything at once.

Taking small steps throughout your pregnancy gives you more time to make thoughtful decisions and leaves those final weeks with a little more room to rest and enjoy the anticipation of meeting your baby.

2. Building a Nursery Instead of Building a Support System

It's easy to spend hours researching the perfect crib, stroller, bassinet, baby monitor, and nursery decor.

But there's something even more important to prepare before your baby arrives: your village.

Before delivery, think seriously about who you can turn to when you need support.

Who could bring you dinner during those first exhausting weeks?

Who could watch your older children while you're at an appointment?

Who could sit with the baby for an hour while you shower or sleep?

Who can you call when you're overwhelmed and simply need someone to listen?

Your village can also include professionals. A lactation consultant, postpartum therapist, sleep consultant, doula, pelvic floor therapist, or other specialist may become an incredibly valuable part of your support system.

You don't necessarily need all of these people, but it's much easier to research your options now than to begin searching for help when you're exhausted and already struggling.

Before your baby arrives, identify a few people—both personally and professionally—you know you can turn to.

The nursery will be beautiful, but your support system is what will help carry you through the difficult days.

3. Putting Yourself at the Bottom of the List

Evergreen Colorado Mountain Photography

Pregnancy has a strange way of making everything about the baby before the baby has even arrived.

What does the baby need?

Is the nursery ready?

Did you buy the right car seat?

Have you researched feeding?

Meanwhile, mom can slowly disappear from her own priority list.

But your well-being matters too.

Pay attention to your physical and emotional needs throughout pregnancy. Rest when your body is telling you to rest. Stay hydrated. Eat nourishing foods. Move your body in ways that feel good and are appropriate for your pregnancy. Make time for things that help you feel like yourself.

And don't overlook your mental health.

If you're struggling emotionally during pregnancy or after your baby arrives, reaching out for professional support is not a failure. It's taking care of yourself and your family.

You are not simply the person carrying the baby.

You are a person going through an enormous physical and emotional transition, and you deserve care during that transition too.

4. Buying Everything Before You Know What You'll Actually Need

Baby marketing is incredibly effective at convincing new parents that they need everything.

Bottle warmers. Wipe warmers. Specialized bassinets. Multiple swings. Dozens of newborn outfits. Every gadget recommended on social media.

Some of those things may become your absolute favorites.

Others may sit untouched.

Before purchasing everything on every baby checklist you find, talk to parents you trust and ask a better question:

"What did you actually use?"

Also remember that babies have preferences.

The bottle your friend's baby loved may be the one your baby refuses. The expensive swing everyone recommended may not interest your baby at all.

Start with the essentials and give yourself permission to purchase additional items once you understand your baby's individual needs.

Not only can this save you money, it can keep your home from becoming overwhelmed with baby products before you even know which ones will work for your family.

5. Preparing Extensively for Birth but Barely Preparing for Postpartum

Pregnancy naturally builds toward one enormous event: birth.

It makes sense that we spend so much time preparing for it.

But labor and delivery are only the beginning.

While you're learning about birth plans and hospital bags, spend some time preparing for what happens when you bring your baby home.

Learn about postpartum recovery and what your body may experience after delivery.

Talk about how responsibilities will be divided at home.

Research feeding options and resources in case you need additional support.

Learn what newborn sleep actually looks like so your expectations are realistic.

Know the difference between typical "baby blues" and signs that you may need additional postpartum mental health support.

And think about something as simple as meals. Having frozen dinners, meal delivery options, or friends and family willing to bring food can make those first weeks significantly easier.

You can't prepare for every possible scenario, and your baby will undoubtedly surprise you.

The goal isn't to control exactly what happens.

It's simply to enter postpartum knowing where you can turn when you need information or support.

6. Becoming So Focused on Preparing for Baby That You Forget to Experience Pregnancy

Pregnancy can quickly become one giant checklist.

Appointments.

Registry.

Nursery.

Baby shower.

Classes.

Hospital bag.

Birth plan.

And then, suddenly, it's over.

In the middle of preparing for your baby's arrival, give yourself permission to experience the chapter you're currently living.

Take the babymoon if you can.

Have a date night with your partner.

Write down the funny things your baby does inside your belly.

Record those little kicks.

Take pictures of your changing body.

Spend time imagining who this tiny person might become.

If you already have children, spend some intentional time with them before their world changes too.

You don't need to love every moment of pregnancy to appreciate what this season represents. Pregnancy can be uncomfortable, exhausting, emotional, and beautiful all at once.

But it is temporary.

Someday, the tiny movements that are such a normal part of your day right now will become memories.

Don't become so focused on preparing for the next chapter that you completely miss the one you're living.

7. Not Capturing This Season With the Right Maternity Photographer

You've spent months preparing for your baby's future.

But don't become so focused on what's coming next that you forget to preserve where their story began.

Pregnancy is one of the shortest chapters of motherhood. Even though it may not always feel short while you're experiencing it, there will come a day when you can barely remember what it felt like to carry your baby inside you.

That's why maternity portraits can become so meaningful.

But choosing the right maternity photographer matters.

You aren't simply looking for someone who owns a nice camera. You want someone who knows how to photograph pregnancy beautifully, understands flattering maternity posing, can help you choose clothing and styling, knows how to work with your partner and children, and can create images that reflect who you actually are.

You also want someone who makes the process easier rather than giving you one more thing to figure out.

As a Colorado fine art maternity photographer with nearly two decades of experience working with mothers, children, and families, I've designed my maternity experience around exactly that.

I'll help you plan your location and overall vision. We'll talk about your style and what you want your portraits to feel like. You'll have access to more than 70 beautiful maternity gowns, and I'll help you narrow those options based on the colors, styles, and looks you love.

I'll guide you through posing during the session so you don't need to know what to do in front of the camera. And when your session is finished, you'll choose the portraits you love most rather than simply being handed a random collection of images someone else selected for you.

My goal is to take care of the details so you can concentrate on experiencing the moment.

Because these aren't simply photographs of what you looked like while you were pregnant.

They're part of your baby's story.

One day, your child will be able to look at those portraits and see you waiting for them.

They'll see where their story began.

You Don't Have to Do Pregnancy Perfectly

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this list, it's that preparing well doesn't mean doing everything perfectly.

You don't need the perfect nursery.

You don't need every baby product.

You don't need to know exactly what motherhood will look like before your baby arrives.

What you can do is make thoughtful choices now that give you more support, more confidence, and more space to experience this incredible transition.

Start preparing a little earlier.

Build your village.

Take care of yourself.

Buy what you actually need.

Prepare for postpartum, not only birth.

Slow down long enough to experience this chapter.

And preserve it before it's gone.

Let's Create Something Worth Remembering

If you're searching for a Colorado fine art maternity photographer who will take the time to learn about you, understand your vision, and guide you through the entire experience, I'd love to start planning with you.

Your maternity session can be dramatic, romantic, adventurous, artistic, or completely unique to your personality. Together, we'll choose the location, gowns, styling, and details that bring your vision to life and create portraits that feel like they truly belong to you.

You only get to experience this pregnancy once.

Let's create something that helps you remember it forever.

Denver Maternity Photographer | The Story Behind a Custom Maternity Image at Red Rocks

One of the things I love most about being a Denver maternity photographer is the opportunity to create something truly personal for every mother I photograph. Maternity portraits are beautiful on their own, but when an image is thoughtfully designed around a story, a personality, or even a baby’s name, it becomes something much more meaningful.

One of the things I love most about being a Denver maternity photographer is the opportunity to create something truly personal for every mother I photograph. Maternity portraits are beautiful on their own, but when an image is thoughtfully designed around a story, a personality, or even a baby’s name, it becomes something much more meaningful.

Sometimes an image begins forming in my mind long before the camera ever comes out.

That was exactly the case with a special portrait I created for my friend Trish.

Where the Vision Began

From the moment we started planning Trish’s maternity session, I had a vision. I knew I wanted to create something that felt magical, something that reflected both her personality and the beautiful name she had chosen for her daughter: Nova.

The name Nova immediately made me think of the night sky—stars, glowing light, and that sense of wonder that comes with looking up into the universe. A nova is a burst of brilliance in the sky, and I wanted to create an image that captured that same feeling of light and possibility for her daughter.

Another important part of the story was the location. We chose Red Rocks, a place that holds special meaning for Trish and her family. Red Rocks is already one of the most iconic landscapes in Colorado, but when it holds personal memories for a family, it becomes even more powerful as a setting for maternity portraits.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Creating an image like this is a blend of real-world elements and artistic editing.

We started with the physical pieces that would set the stage for the portrait. The gown was carefully selected based on Trish’s personality. I wanted something that had a subtle touch of gothic elegance and felt a little more edgy. Choosing a gown that matched her style helped the portrait feel authentic and personal rather than simply styled for the sake of the photo.

The dramatic rock formations at Red Rocks provided the perfect backdrop—strong, timeless, and deeply connected to Trish’s story.

But creating a portrait like this doesn’t stop once the photograph is taken.

In the editing process, I brought the concept to life by enhancing the night sky and weaving in celestial elements that reflected Nova’s name. I also added the lantern, a warm glow and symbolic light, representing the new life she was about to welcome. The final image became something more than a simple portrait—it became a piece of artwork created specifically for Trish and her daughter.

Custom maternity portrait

Creating Something Personal for Every Client

This is one of my favorite parts of maternity photography. While every session includes beautiful portraits, sometimes we can go a step further and create something truly custom.

A baby’s name, a family’s story, a meaningful location, or even a mother’s personality can inspire a completely unique image.

For Trish, that inspiration was Nova and the magic of the night sky.

For another family, it might be something entirely different.

Your Story Could Be the Inspiration

When we begin planning your maternity session, I love hearing about the details that make your story unique. Maybe your baby’s name has a special meaning. Maybe there’s a location that’s important to your family. Maybe you have an idea or vision you’ve always dreamed of creating.

Those conversations help shape the creative process and allow me to design images that feel deeply personal and meaningful to you.

Because the most powerful maternity portraits aren’t just beautiful—they tell a story.

Let’s Create Something Extraordinary

If you’re looking for a Denver maternity photographer who can help you create something more than a traditional portrait, I would love to work with you.

Together, we can design a maternity session that reflects your personality, your story, and the incredible new life you’re about to welcome.

Whether your vision is bold and artistic or soft and timeless, we can create images that feel like true works of art.

Reach out today to begin planning your custom maternity session. I would love to hear your story and help bring your vision to life.

The Science of Light: Why Timing Matters in Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Pregnancy is a fleeting, magical season—and your maternity photos should capture that glow in the most beautiful, intentional way possible. But there’s a secret ingredient that separates ordinary maternity photos from fine art, frame-worthy portraits: light.

As a Front Range maternity photographer specializing in Colorado’s outdoor and mountain maternity photography, I guide every session around the science of light, ensuring your photos feel dreamy, luminous, and timeless.

The Problem: Ordinary Photos Fail to Capture Your Glow

Colorado Winter Maternity session

Many expecting mothers schedule sessions at convenient times—midday, during errands, or when the sun is harsh overhead. The result? Squinting, harsh shadows, washed-out colors, and lost detail. Ordinary light fails to highlight your curves, your baby bump, and that radiant pregnancy glow.

When you settle for standard lighting, you’re left with images that don’t fully tell the story of your pregnancy. You deserve more than snapshots—you deserve art.

The Guide: Why I Only Shoot Maternity Sessions at Sunset

After years of photographing mamas along the Front Range, in Denver, and in the mountains, I’ve found that sunset light—often called “golden hour”—offers unparalleled beauty and control. Here’s why:

  • Soft, Warm Light: Sunset casts a golden glow that enhances skin tones, highlights curves, and brings out the natural warmth of your pregnancy.

  • Dimensional Shadows: Unlike harsh midday sun, sunset light creates subtle, flattering shadows that sculpt your silhouette and highlight your baby bump.

  • Mood and Atmosphere: The warm, fading light creates a romantic, ethereal quality, perfect for mountain maternity photography or serene Front Range settings.

  • Color Enhancement: The sky’s gradient at sunset—from gold to blush to soft lavender—adds natural color to your background, giving your portraits a dreamy, editorial feel.

Shooting at sunset isn’t just a preference—it’s a crucial part of creating the kind of portraits that become heirloom artwork for your home.

The Plan: How We Make Sunset Maternity Sessions Work

As your Colorado maternity photographer, I take care of all the details so you can relax and enjoy the experience:

  1. Timing Your Session: I schedule each session so we hit the golden hour perfectly, ensuring every shot is bathed in soft, flattering light.

  2. Choosing the Right Location: Whether it’s a mountain overlook, Denver park, or Front Range open field, we select a location that complements your gowns, styling, and vision.

  3. Gown Selection & Styling: From my collection of over 70 maternity gowns—including flowing dresses, floral prints for spring, lace, and satin—we select pieces that photograph beautifully in sunset light. Accessories and family styling complete the look.

  4. Guided Posing: I guide you through poses that maximize the light, show off your baby bump, and feel natural and comfortable.

The result? Portraits that feel intentional, glowing, and timeless—images that tell the story of your pregnancy in a way that a casual phone snapshot never could.

The Success: Timeless Maternity Portraits You’ll Treasure

By scheduling your session at sunset, you get more than just flattering light:

  • Golden, glowing portraits that celebrate your pregnancy

  • Editorial-quality images that could hang as fine art in your home

  • Family moments captured in the most beautiful Colorado landscapes

From Denver maternity sessions to mountain maternity photography, the light becomes a collaborator in telling your story. Each image reflects not just your appearance, but the warmth, anticipation, and emotion of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
