Sometimes an image begins forming in my mind long before the camera ever comes out.
That was exactly the case with a special portrait I created for my friend Trish.
Where the Vision Began
From the moment we started planning Trish’s maternity session, I had a vision. I knew I wanted to create something that felt magical, something that reflected both her personality and the beautiful name she had chosen for her daughter: Nova.
The name Nova immediately made me think of the night sky—stars, glowing light, and that sense of wonder that comes with looking up into the universe. A nova is a burst of brilliance in the sky, and I wanted to create an image that captured that same feeling of light and possibility for her daughter.
Another important part of the story was the location. We chose Red Rocks, a place that holds special meaning for Trish and her family. Red Rocks is already one of the most iconic landscapes in Colorado, but when it holds personal memories for a family, it becomes even more powerful as a setting for maternity portraits.

Creating an image like this is a blend of real-world elements and artistic editing.
We started with the physical pieces that would set the stage for the portrait. The gown was carefully selected based on Trish’s personality. I wanted something that had a subtle touch of gothic elegance and felt a little more edgy. In the editing process, I brought the concept to life by enhancing the night sky and weaving in celestial elements that reflected Nova’s name. I also added the lantern, a warm glow and symbolic light, representing the new life she was about to welcome. The final image became something more than a simple portrait—it became a piece of artwork created specifically for Trish and her daughter.

In one session that stands out, Dad happened to be out of town on the scheduled date. When I offered to move the session, mom let me know that portraits were really her thing—something she had been dreaming about—and she wanted to move forward even without him.
It’s important to share that Dad is a loving husband and a very involved parent. But like many families, sometimes one partner is more drawn to the idea of portraits than the other. In this case, maternity photography was especially meaningful to mom, and she embraced the chance to create a session that reflected her vision.
Rather than postponing, she chose to celebrate this season with her children and her own mother, who plays a crucial role in their lives. That choice created an opportunity to tell a story that was uniquely hers—one centered on motherhood, family connection, and the bonds she wanted to honor.
This particular session took place at Red Rocks in nearby Morrison CO, a location that brought its own magic to the experience. The sweeping views and dramatic formations created a breathtaking stage for portraits that felt both intimate and timeless, while still keeping the focus on the family and the love between them.
